Abstract

The film Así es la vida, by Arturo Ripstein, is an adaptation of the tragedy Medea by Seneca; it is set in a contemporary mexican environment. This essay deals not only with the coincidences about characters, action and structure, but also with the fact that the film brings up to date the singularity of the senecan dramatic play in relation to the themes of ineffable things, the true and the memory, themes wich are also typical of Ripstein’s cinema.
