The appearance and growth of Christianity was accompanied by a similar progressive development of Latin epigraphic poetry. In its early stages, this poetry was mostly informative in character, and often admonitory, especially in the epitaphs of the non-Christian carmina. Under Christianity, however, epigraphic poetry took on a more didactic character. This paper will outline and discuss this development.
