Following H.-I. Marrou, critics have readily seen a rupture between the first five books of the De musica of St. Augustine and the latter; and the introduction to Book VI would bear the mark of emendatio. This study endeavors, on the contrary, to show the coherence of the whole of the Augustinian treatise, in which the number -musical or not, from propedeutics to philosophy-becomes an indispensable tool for theology.Downloads
