This paper focuses, firstly, on the Scaliger’s explanation about how the notions of real things are created in the intellect. In the same way, our work shows how these notions turn into signs, and connect this process with a long tradition of conservation and the recovery of knowledge represented by the art of memory. Finally, our investigation reflects on the value of images in the Scaligers’s explanation about the linguistic sign par excellence: the Word (dictio).
