The aim of this paper is to describe the genesis and composition of Braulio Foz’s Arte Latino (1842), a school grammar, within the academic and social context of the first half of nineteenth century in Spain. Its grammatical characteristics are analyzed in order to focus the attention on the linguistic and pedagogic principles which rule Foz’s book, in most cases inherited from the Enlightenment and shared by the Spanish contemporary philological thought. We hope this paper can contribute to improve the knowledge of modern history of Classical Studies in Spain.
