Irony is a characteristic feature of Sallust’s style, which has received little attention by critics. In what follows, I will first analyse the formal characteristics of this stylistic device, by focusing on techniques which are most commonly employed by the author in order to achieve an ironic tone and I then specify the purposes of using this device: apparent objectivity and critical denunciation, which may refer to generic concepts or individuals. The aim of Sallust’s irony is not to provoke the readers’ laughter; rather, its main function is to contribute towards the critical and moralizing thread in classical historiography.
