Abstract

In this paper we aim to explain the reasons for which, during the Renaissance, the reading notas similitudines is preferred (as opposed to the commonly accepted present-day notatas similitudines) in the passage Rhetorica ad Herennium (3, 37) that describes the function of the memoria artificialis and, more specifically, the composition of imagines firmae.
