Abstract

The Calar del Mundo is a karstic aquifer of great importance in the Iberian Peninsula, which feeds the Mundo, Tús and Frío rivers, which flow into the Segura and Guadalquivir basins. Its main discharge is produced in the Cueva de los Chorros, a karstic cavity with some 40 km of topographical galleries located in Vianos, near to Riopar (Albacete). On the basis of daily climatic data taken at a station located on the Cañada de los Mojones polje, through which the cave flows, and measurements of the epiphreatic level from a sensor installed at the Brillo Lake, a point close to the upwelling, a simulation of the drained flows has been carried out using a transfer model. This model has made it possible to calculate the groundwater catchment basin downstream of the level measurement point, the permeability and the storage coefficient, as well as the volume recharged during the period from October 2018 to December 2023. The average recharge obtained was 11.8 hm3/year, with a catchment basin of 20 km2. The study shows a high transmissivity in the unsaturated zone, which causes very rapid flows and low storage capacity, especially during floods.
