The lava flows from the Cofrentes volcano carry a variety of xenoliths including mafic granulites composed of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and olivine. The petrography and mineral chemistry of these enclaves point to an igneous origin of their protoliths, with subsequent re-equilibration in granulite facies conditions. These rocks represent lower crustal cumulates, resulting from crystallization of basic magmas. They also display textural features compatible with reaction with the host alkaline melts. These granulites are exclusively mafic, unlike what is observed in other sectors of the Iberian Massif, where felsic granulite xenoliths are abundant.
