On October 29, 2024, in the context of a DANA climate situation, a flood seriously affected part of the Letur’s old town (Albacete, south Spain). Apart from the direct effects that involved six deaths and extensive damage, cracks and displacements of up to half a meter were observed in buildings and pavements in some sectors. The town is located on a travertine promontory with scarps of tens of meters, which advances on the edge of a Miocene basin filled in the Pliocene. There is cartographic evidence that the tuffaceous building is highly unstable and is subject to rapid geomorphological evolution, which is appreciable through InSAR techniques. This work constitutes a preliminary study of the factors that condition the evolution of the promontory and the interactions between floods, anthropic activity and geotechnical stability, which imply significant risks.
