Abstract

The study area is located in the Sierra de Segura, in the NE of the province of Jaén, in the Prebetic area, where outcrops of carbonate rocks predominate. The recharge heights of two aquifer systems of great social and environmental relevance have been determined. For this purpose, the stable δ18O and δ2H isotopes of water from 360 samples from 20 springs, collected between October 2020 and February 2023, were analysed. In addition, 430 precipitation samples were taken from 8 pluviocaptors located between 550 and 1809 m a.s.l. Three isotopic methodologies were applied. The first two, through rainfall analysis, and the third through very low flow springs in which the recharge area is located at a similar discharge elevation. The results show higher average recharge height values with the first and second method (1356 and 1163 m for the Cretaceous and Jurassic aquifers), while the third method presents values of 1203 and 999.5 m, respectively. Methods 2 and 3 are the ones that best fit taking into account the average heights of the Jurassic and Cretaceous outcrops (950 and 1250 m a.s.l.). In addition, it is more efficient for sampling.
