"Cities and urban spaces in global politics"

Scientific Coordinator: Robert Kissack

What role do cities play in the XXI century’s international politics? To what extent the inclusion of cities into global governance institutions jeopardizes the role of sovereign states as junction between domestic and international politics? In 2010 cities surpassed the rural areas as home for over half of the world's population, and that number could reach 70% in a generation due to population growth and migrations. The current issue of Revista CIDOB d' Afers Internacionals explores the impact of cities in international politics from various perspectives: the inclusion of cities to global governance structures, their relation to recent popular uprisings as well as the impact and reality of the informal economy in the urban space. Moreover, two case studies illustrate identity and culture issues, innovative and pioneering initiatives, and a study on EU’s urban policy.
