Integration or fragmentation? Latin America and the liberal order

Analytical assumptions regarding the East and West are emerging as key categories to understand and reinterpret the transformation of the liberal order underway. Amid these political changes, however, the Global South is (re)emerging as a meta-category whose nature takes multiple roles. From a historical perspective, this paper analyses the milestones that have formed the notion of the Global South in terms of cooperation and development, with a particular focus on Latin America. It examines the place that the region occupies in the reconfiguration of the global order, starting from the premise that the more technical levels of regional governance allow it to adapt to hegemonic confrontations while maintaining its autonomy. Despite ideological differences, Latin America has resilient regional integration bodies that provide it with options to tackle the various global challenges.
