Abstract

La Federal was built as a political and social utopia during the Revolutionary Sexennium. Republicans consciously promoted their project as utopian, by understanding that their job was to create a possible future to which their action should be directed. The political part of utopia was a federation emerging from the pact between independent cantons, formed and chosen spontaneously by the people. Social utopia was a federation of agricultural and industrial producers. The result was the imagined Republic that led to the permanent revolution, until its failed implementation in 1873.
