Abstract

Reinhart Koselleck argues that the inevitable tension between innovation and repeatability is a constant in human experience that makes historical change possible. Change can only come about when these two principles exist, in different measures and combinations. He suggests that the structures of repetition are present at all levels: they can be found not just in the natural, astronomical, geological and biological conditions that allow human life to flourish, but also in social, legal and political organisations and institutions humans themselves have established. If we carefully examine sequences of particular events, we soon spot structures of repetition and courses of action with marked resemblances. Even the most singular events often slot into certain frames based on the more or less periodic redundancy and return of certain structures. This view makes it possible to venture some ideas about the future, including, for example, prophecy, prognosis and planning. Finally, the author deals with the recurrent structures that most specifically affect language. He examines some classic cases of polarisation: between synchrony and diachrony, and between syntax, pragmatics and semantics. This leads him to reflect on different modalities of tension between factual and linguistic history, between political and linguistic change, and their respective time lags. He concludes by emphasising that a close analysis of what lies behind what appears to be a great ideological, linguistic or semantic innovation often reveals both singular elements and structures of repetition. There will always be a certain proportionality between the unrepeatable and the reiterative.
