Abstract

The study presented here shows how art, and in particular artistic heritage is used as an educational resource by teachers, can become an effective tool for students to delve into social problems related to poverty, social exclusion and inequality, improve their perception of their causes and foster positive attitudes towards the group.

The research used a mixed methodology with a CUAN+CUAL design. The quantitative part had a pre-post quasi-experimental design through the application of two validated scales to a group-class.  It had a sample of 59 first year students of the Education and Social Work University Faculty. For the qualitative part, the data obtained in the discussion groups formed in the classroom after the implementation of an educational proposal in which art plays a key role as a guiding thread in the analysis of the social realities presented were analysed.

The results show significant changes in the attributions about the causes of poverty and social exclusion and in the positive attitudes of the students who in the future will become professionals who will play a key role in combating this social scourge.

It is concluded that further research is needed in this line to refine the proposal and implement it with students of other educational levels and/or professional profiles (e.g. health field) and to increase the artistic training of the teacher.
