Abstract

In initial teacher education (ITE) it is important to have conditions for strong socialization with teaching and with the breadth of functions required in the exercise of the profession. Based on this reference, the study aimed to know the conditions of the Portuguese model of ITE for socialization with the profession. In the methodological procedure, coordinators of 21 courses were interviewed, out of the 148 existing in Portugal, which enables teaching in the twelve years of compulsory education, and 16 cooperating teachers at the schools where the professional practice is carried out. The interviewees’ speeches, interpreted by the content analysis technique, allow pointing out the: need to bring to the academic debate a reflection on the conditions of preparation of future teachers to deal with the inherent complexity of the teaching profession, namely in the time of contact with schools and with professional practice; the importance of recognizing the role of cooperating teachers and supervisors who accompany students in the processes of professional socialization so that they are able to engage in didactic research and professional practice; need to strengthen ITE policies and programs that encourage socialization with the profession-oriented towards the continuous improvement of quality of teacher education.

Maria de Fátima de Sousa Pereira is Assistant Teacher at Higher School Education of Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (ESE-IPVC), PhD in Educational Sciences from Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of University of Porto (FPCEUP). Integrated member of CIIE - Educational Research and Intervention Center of FPCEUP and member of Practical Research Community: Curriculum, Evaluation, Training and Educational Technologies (CAFTe) of this research center. Its teaching and research activities, within the scope of teacher education and training, focus on issues related to educactional and curricular policies and practices, educational evaluation and assessment, educational innovation to improve quality of teaching and teacher training, areas in which has published articles. Coordinator of the Degree in Basic Education (since 2015) and the Post-Graduation in School Administration and Educational Innovation (since 2016) at ESE-IPVC.

Carlinda Leite , Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas da Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto

Carlinda Leite is Emeritus Professor at the University of Porto, Portugal, and serves as President of the Research Ethics Committee from the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP). She is Director of Research at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education of the University of Porto (CIIE-UP), co-chairing the research community of practice entitled Curriculum, Evaluation, Teacher Education and Educational Technologies (CAFTe). She is serving as the chairperson for the evaluation of all degree programmes (1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles) in the Education field in the Portuguese Universities, since 2015, undertaken by the Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (A3ES). She also participated in panels of countrywide evaluation reviews of university Education in countries as Croatia, Lithuania, São Tomé and Príncipe. With an international profile in the field of educational evaluation and curriculum studies, she holds a special extensive collaboration with Brazil, being Visiting Professor at several Brazilian Universities, where she often gives keynote presentations and undertake research and consultancy. Currently she is an expert advisor of a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Brazil’s project and of the Project between Brazil/France and Brazil/Portugal of the CAPES High School Programme.
She directs research focused on curriculum studies, educational policies, evaluation and quality of education, learning assessment, teacher education, teaching in higher education and multiculturalism and education. She is also interested in engineering education, innovative teaching and learning and digital inclusion. She published 22 books and monographs and over 240 scholarly articles and book chapters. Carlinda Leite supervised 26 successful doctorates, 15 postdoctoral researchers. She also supervised 24 Brazilian doctoral students, in a PhD mobility scheme, at FPCEUP.

Paulo Marinho , Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas da Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do PORTO. POrtugal

Paulo Marinho completed Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences, in 2014/03/31, by Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto and did Pos-doctoral in Education, 2015, in Federal University of Alagoas (Brazil). Was visiting professor Federal University of Alagoas (2015-2019). Is Researcher in University of Porto, Member of the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education - Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, integrating the practical community of research - Curriculum, Evaluation, Training and Educational Technologies. Consultant of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Consutant/Scientific Adviser in State Departments of Education of Brazil (Educational Evaluation Sector - SAVE) and expert in the national teams of the Portuguese Ministry of Education of external evaluation of schools. Participated as PhD Student Fellow in 1 project, Pos-doctoral Fellow in 1 project, Principal investigator in 6 projects, Researcher in 7 projects and Supervisor in 3 projects. Regarding to research projects, it is worth mentioning the coordination of projects (as Principal investigator in a international context) funded in the area of evaluation, highlighting the funding by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), CAPES, National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ) and the Foundation for Research Support in the State of Alagoas (FAPEAL). In national context, is researcher contracted in the DigPSEM project (2018-2021), financed by FCT, and researcher member in the study, financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on indicators and models for learning evaluation (2018-2021), and in the international research (Argentina, Chile, Spain, England, Portugal) on processes and practices of equity, inclusion and quality in public schools, financed by the Ministry of Education of Spain (2018-2021). Has received 2 awards and/or honors. Works mainly on the following themes: Assessment of learning and school success; Schools self-evaluation; School organizational cultures and teaching professionals; Educational and curricular policies; and Philosophy of science.
