Abstract

Student participation at school is presented as a space for civic education and sustainable development from the 2030 agenda. The work represented brings together a range of student participation that favor the development of citizenship competencies. The study is based on 28 semi-structured interviews with 14 principals and 14 teachers from secondary schools, with the objective of finding out how student participation is developed. For the analysis of the information, a coding process structured in two cycles was established, obtaining codes that were refined until they constituted the thematic axes that are presented below. The results point to a greater importance of non-conventional forms of participation (citizenship projects, protest actions, service-learning initiatives) over conventional ones (school council, class delegates) in the development of citizenship skills. The mobilization of student participation in school life is recognized, but there is also evidence of the need for greater systematization in the planning and development of such participatory processes, the lack of teacher training to guide students and the importance of the involvement of civil society in citizenship projects linked to the school.
