Abstract

We analyse the social and professional specialisation of a collective that was historically marginalised because they descended from Jewish converts to Christianity: The Mallorcan xuetes. The study covers the period from the final stage of the Old Regime to the year immediately prior to the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). On the one hand, their eminently commercial vocation and specialisation in certain lines of business in particular can be confirmed, as well as the intergenerational transmission of a series of professional skills sustained by endogamy-based marriages, family relations and close-knit bonds of solidarity among members of the group.
