Abstract

The article focuses on the arrival of the large and modern brewing industry in Barcelona following the founding of Camps and Kuentzmann in 1872, in what was then the municipality of Sant Martí de Provençals, bordering the city. After a brief boom in the sector, which also marked the beginning of the Damm family’s involvement in the brewing world, the company came to a sudden end in late 1874. With the departure of August Kuentzmann Damm, the successor, Camps y Compañía, remained active for barely a year, possibly due to difficulties in finding another qualified brewmaster in a country with a strong winemaking tradition. In 1875, Kuentzmann continued his career independently, establishing his second company in Barcelona, which operated until September 1876. That same year, he launched his third brewery, where his cousin Joseph Damm served as brewmaster. After Kuentzmann’s death in 1877, his wife Milania took over the management of the business until 1880.
