Abstract

Any changes in major eco-systems are central to calculating Sustainability, we are told. The matter here
discussed is held to be a major impact factor as it is one of those which could be deemed as having irreversible
consequences on those necessarily, limited resources which are the bedrock of Sustainability. For the fi rst
time in Spain it has been possible to observe the on-going process of land settlement between 1987-2000
thanks to the hard information offered to the Corine Land Cover project by Landsat satellite images. The
Sustainability Watch Observatory has analysed this in terms of its social-economic and environmental tieins
and the fi ndings here are said to indicate: (a) an accentuated upsurge in the creating of artifi cial
environments both in the interior and coastline regions with major and irreversible consequences, (b) a
marked decline in woodland eco-systems affecting both their structuring and make-up due to poor
management, this leading to an increase in scrubland and fi re risks, (c) A growth in irrigation often in areas
of scant hydraulic resources and (d) a drying up of natural ‘wet-zones’ coupled with an increase in artifi cial
‘sheet-water’ installations. In short, the author fi nds that there has been a over-spending of environmental
capital and dead loss as to its quality and that the process is not abating.
