Abstract

The paper, in studying various processes of rural area industrial development during the last decade in Spain, analyses the High Technology sector and its urban-rural dynamics. The study contemplates the provinces of Guadalajara, Ciudad Real and Gerona but draws attention to the fact that the process of rural to urban re-structuring can vary even within a given province. Companies in the sector are said above all to seek competitive advantage and thus, thanks to the opportunities for this that improved transport links and technological access to rural areas now offer, to have moved out into once depressed areas. Gudalajara’s closeness to Madrid is here seen to be a capital factor in the sector’s development there. In Ciudad Real it is seen to be marked by a much greater territorial dispersion whereas in Gerona very remote rural areas seem to be preferred.
