Fifty years of urban transformations in Galicia: How have we changed?

Since the mid-20th century, the Galician territory has undergone significant modifications related to urbanization changes. These have influenced the way the territory is occupied, transforming a predominantly rural Galicia into an urban society. In a short period of time, the region has experienced an accelerated urbanization process (from the 1980s to almost 2008 with the outbreak of the crisis) polarized around the municipalities of the main Galician cities. To demonstrate the consequences and territorial imbalances generated by this poorly or uncontrolled urban development – despite a series of laws and legislative changes in urban planning during the autonomous stage – a series of demographic and land occupation indicators have been used, allowing us to analyze the growth of Galician cities.
