The landscape of metropolitan suburbanization: the single-family home as a symbol of the Madrid urban area

This research proposes the clarification of Madrid s residential landscapes in the first metropolitan area, where the single-family dwelling, through a wide typological variety, acquires special prominence. This objective is approached through a diachronic methodology, with two chronological references: 1975 and 2024, which allow us to understand the complexity of the suburbanization phenomenon in the last fifty years. In order to identify and quantify the single-family dwellings in both moments, the population and housing censuses of 1991 and 2021 and the cadastral databases elaborated by the General Directorate of Cadastre have been used. The panorama is completed with the elaboration of a typology of this residential model, used in various urban developments with very different formal treatments.
