Abstract

Though most know what any definition refers to, the author holds that when it comes to indicating a concrete example of what would satisfy the same, people tend to become less confident, grow somewhat hazy or offer platitudes or generalities. This phenomenon is here said to have two origins, being either the fruit of unconfessed preconceptions that thrive in the shade of General Theories or, then again, no more than instances of confusing that which stands and is a fact with the thinking that brought it into being. The author claims that it would be as well to sharpen up and thin down many terms so as to leave them free of much that has little to do with them and overmuch with those who use them.
