Abstract

The author sees Cerda 's 1859 «Ensanche» Plan for Barcelona as a design for an integral city. To achieve this, he is here said to have based it on universal principals and goals and to have used some few technical instruments not unlike the random attractors of the Theory of Chaos. Both his projects and thinking are here held to have stood the test of Time for almost 150 years and to be still valid today. The author justifies his claims by seeing both as the guide lines which informed the Metropolitan General Plan for Barcelona of 1998.
