Abstract

The paper tells of how the 19C. creation of the figure of the Civil Engineer gave rise to a great stir amongst the professionals of the Works and Building sector. Architects, egged out of Public Works, quickly laid claim to privileges granted to the Royal Beaux Arts Academy in the 18C. After warm closed shop debate, the government settled the matter by decreeing that the engineers should have all public works -and amongst these that of drawing up planned city extension projects- while the architects should have the designing of public and private buildings.
