Abstract

The city-port of Valparaíso (Chile) is located in an abrupt topography, which has caused a complex urban planning throughout the growth of the city. The “tomas” or occupations of land outside of any order, are the mechanism by which the city has been growing towards new peripheries until today. This irregular procedure of appropriation of the land has generated a seemingly disordered configuration far from any structured and rational form, but which nevertheless has generated a new periphery according to the reality of the city itself, as evidenced by the present article. Through a critical analysis of the recent events that the periphery of this city has suffered, research has shown how, even though they are informal growths and viewed negatively from planning, their functioning, logic and repercussion in the city will not be so.
