This paper studies 45 fiction films whose shootings, carried out between 1922 and
2016, have taken place totally or partially in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid. It is a space that, due to its centrality, functionality, situation and architectural qualities represents one of the most iconic public spaces in the city, acting as a large stage. The detailed analysis of the movies fragments allows the identification of the iconic elements of this square, those that have received more cinematic attention, and inquire into the motives of their presentation. Likewise, the fragments of the analyzed films show –in a more expressive way than the catalogs of photographs- the numerous changes and urban transformations that the Plaza Mayor of Madrid has undergone throughout its recent history. Finally, the contribution ends with an analysis of the narrative uses of the Plaza Mayor in the selected films, taking into account the special architectural configuration of this built environment. We consider that this type of analysis provides information of interest on the representation of a reduced geographic space, providing a methodology that is transposable to other areas, allowing also to delving into a theoretical reflection on the varied relations between geographic and cinematographic space.
