Suburban and Rural Building in Andalusia: 2001 and 2006
Keywords:
Suburban pehnomenon, periurban, diffusion area, building density, AndalusiaAbstract
This paper shows the first results of a study of the suburban phenomenon in the cities of
Andalusia. Its purpose is to identify the space associated with this phenomenon and the basic ways
in which it is organised. A map of suburban and rural building has been drawn up for this.
It shows how the Andalusian urban system has developed a new space associated with urban
nuclei. Rather than confirming the secular spatial conception that is based on separation between
the urban and rural worlds, a true transition space has been generated as a projection of the
suburban phenomenon of sprawl areas. The discontinuity between city and countryside has been
replaced by the existence of an urban–rural gradient, the size and formal structure of which is
shown by the mapping prepared.
