Barcelona as a Hypothetical Model and its Incidence in other Cities
Keywords:
Modelos urbanos, Barcelona, Bilbao, Monterrey, Río de JaneiroAbstract
The author does not consider it right to understand Barcelona’s planning history as having given
rise to a model of ideal reference up to being used as a measuring rod for or thing to be imitated
by other cities. Be this so, he does accept that certain happy undertakings there during the 80s and
early 90s of the last century have infl uenced many Spanish and even some other European and
South American cities. This said, the author sees more of coincidence than of infl uence in the case
of Bilbao and Barcelona. What is said here to characterize Barcelona’s planning practice is more its
method that the city type sought after or the way projects are formalized. Barcelona’s practical
infl uence, though made for Latin America (Rio, Buenos Aires, Monterrey) could never claim the
same sort of starting points, grounding for any project, nor outcome as those proper to Barcelona
during the? Model? Period of reference, namely that of Mayor Maragall.
