Abstract

The article focuses on urban industrial heritage, its planning and management in some Spanish cities from
a geographical standpoint. The cultural and architectonic value of such assets are seen as offering much in
the line of reconversion. However, a lot of industrial heritage has been lost to Spain’s cities in favour of a
residential use being given to what where industrial elements in the urban ground plan.
Nowadays, urban planning, after decades of massive renewal and speculation, is making much of this legacy,
seeing it as a key aspect of the common memory and of the planning of cities. The paper considers the

strategy for evaluating the cultural and economic worth of this, during several phases of intervention, It
offers a variety of different Spanish cases in point, fi xing upon two of the most interesting of these, namely
those applied in what has come to be known as the heritage corridor of the Llobregat river and in the Poblenou
district of Barcelona under Plan 22@ Barcelona, with their scheme for architectonic conservation of the
industrial past, technological innovation and urban renewal.
