The establishment of the Junta de Extremadura in 1983 led to the creation of a General Directorate that would assume responsibilities in Urban Planning and Territorial Planning. At that time, urban plans were not very accessible, and their approval generated little interest. Gradually, urban planning gained weight and importance for administrations and, in general, for citizens, while territorial planning barely developed. The natural progression towards territorial planning began with the approval of the first regional law in 2001 and was consolidated through the drafting, processing, and approval of territorial planning instruments. Currently, Extremadura has several territorial plans in effect, as well as a significant number of territorial plans and regional-level Territorial Planning Guidelines under development.
