Urban Projects and Accessing Coal: Northern Coahuila (1870-1910)
Keywords:
Minería, proyectos urbanos, Coahuila (México)Abstract
The article explores the spatial relations between accessing a mineral and settling the same land
with those involved in doing so in a famous North Mexican region. The subject here examined is felt
to be of importance given the 1880 putting aside of the previous and Bourbon/Spanish ordinances
governing the matter. The text also takes a fresh look at the cultural aspects involved; here felt to
be useful for any understanding of this mining sector’s dynamics in the Northeast and of some of
its confl ictive periods. The question of whether being a mining town as such has any impact in itself
upon its intrinsic planning and settlement patterns is put forward, the legal and ownership pressures
arising from optimizing the accessing of the mineral as against the calls for urbanizing the same
ground for city demands being here analyzed and the whole seen to be further subject to its
Spanish- American dimensions.
