The front gardens in the city: a historical-evolutionary approach

This article addresses the front yard as a space of interest for the city and considers the problem of the scarcity of useful information for the construction of a theoretical corpus. It focuses on its conceptual and operational definition and its antecedents with three objectives: a) To establish its genesis. b) To expose its function in urban history. c) To give an account of its usefulness. The work is developed in two stages: i) Bibliographic review with search protocols in databases and consultation of literature and planimetric material in printed format; ii) Justification of the front garden in the city from the exploration of theoretical elements. The results highlight three ideas: the front garden included in the notion of type in architecture and urban planning, the approach to a remote antecedent and its inclusion in different historical moments, and its social, economic and ecological validity in the city.
