Abstract

The rates of prevalence and incidence of schizophrenic disorder in Navarra are similar to those published for other regions of Spain and Europe. The real annual prevalence is situated at about 0.8% and the assisted rate at about 0.2%. The real annual incidence is possibly close to 0.2%, and the assisted rate is about the same figure. There are probably many cases of subjects with schizophrenia in the community, both old and new, who do not require psychiatric care. Consequently, the outlook for the disease is not as pessimistic as the collective imagination would have it. A better and earlier detection of the disease is required.
