First, in this paper I intend to take a brief look at the concept of «love» in the Middle Ages, as well as at the literary canons in which both an idealized image of love relationships and a rhetoric of sentimental discourse are developed. This should lead us to the effects of this conception of love in literature, with a great weight of both the tradition established by Horace (Ars amatoria and Remedia amoris), recast and shown in different texts throughout the Middle Ages, and by the Church as a promoter of a containment of the feelings and impulses of those in love. The consequence of all this is illness (with different symptoms), madness or death by love, as medieval European literature shows us. We will take various examples from Goliardic poetry, from Provençal, Galician-Portuguese, Castilian, French or Italian love poetry, or from the roman courtois. Our journey through love and its consequences will thus be sufficiently illustrated
