Materiality and structure of the editio princeps of Juan del Encina’s Cancionero (96JE)

The aim of this article is the material analysis of the first edition of Juan del Encina’s Cancionero, a Castilian incunabulum published for the first time in 1496, in Juan de Porras’ printing house in Salamanca. This study deals with the different aspects of the materiality of the print, wich may reveal information about the criteria of compilation, sequencing and arrangement of the poetic works, as well as provide indications about the objectives of the author. In addition, two of the preserved copies of the editio princeps are examined: those kept in the libraries of the RAE and the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
