Alfonso X The Wise, Setenario, Fernando III, Sancho IV, Father and sonAbstract
Based on the new dating of the Setenario, the author analyses this work as a testament and legacy of Alfonso X for his successor to the throne. To this end, Alfonso undertakes a translatio towards the figure of his father, Fernando III, portraying him not only as the perfect king but also as the author of the work. In doing so, he offers a model of father–son relations in contrast with the absence of such a relationship with Infante Sancho, thus creating a play of inverted mirrors. The text also explores the possible meaning of Law 11 concerning knowledge, and concludes by highlighting the absence of “the people” in the Setenario—the missing element in the political science of Alfonso’s final work.
