This article addresses the coping and de-victimization strategies deployed by victims of racist and xenophobic incidents in Spain from a qualitative perspective. Through 24 semi-structured interviews with a variety of sociodemographic profiles, various responses adopted by victims of racist and xenophobic incidents to mitigate the impact of these events in the short and long term are explored. The main findings of the study are, firstly, the deployment of type of coping strategies depends on the social factors and the position of vulnerability of the people interviewed rather than the severity of the incident suffered. On the other hand, the significant difficulty in achieving de-victimization (as a goal) given the structural barriers faced by color people; the lack of social and institutional resources available for overcoming racial trauma, as well as the significant difficulty in reconfiguring a positive identity in a context where exclusion and symbolic violence are persistent. Young people, born or socialized in Spain and with high human capital, are those who adopt more ambitious strategies to overcome the impact of racism, towards the positive reconfiguration of their ethnic-racial identity. In contrast, the severe restriction of economic, social, and institutional resources hinders the process of restoring a damaged identity and, consequently, critically obstructs the ability to heal.
