The aim of this paper is to judge the historical value of Pomponius’s Enchiridion as the main source for the ius civile in the first centuries of the Roman Republic. Its historical value diminishes greatly as it is proved that Pomponius reproduces the outline already used by Sextus Aelius in his Tripertita ratio.
