A well-known anecdote by Donatus has been used repeatedly in traditional the Western literary tradition in the context of the debate about plagiarism and the limits of intertextuality. The anecdote appears linked to the controversy between the ancients and the moderns, and to the discussions about the possibility of polygenesis. In literature the subject was already developed in a Neolatin epigram by Étienne Pasquier.
