In the present work we examined in detail a flooding event in a karst spring intended for drinking water supply of Ubrique municipality (Cádiz province). Thus, an approach focused on the characterization of sediment transport and the presence of Escherichia coli as an indicator of fecal contamination has been applied. The results show the temporal variations of physico-chemical parameters, particle distribution and its direct implications on bacterial transport in a karst spring during a heavy rain episode. In addition, the usefulness of continuous monitoring strategies of such parameters for the development of a telemetry/remote system to prevent the contamination in springs intended for human consumption is analyzed.
