The sequence in the development of structures in the Cuevas de Cañart (CC) syncline (Linking zone in the Iberian Chain), provides an opportunity to understand the distribution of deformation mechanisms in thrusts at shallow crustal levels. The CC basin shows three different structural trends that resulted in the folding of structures with Iberian direction (NW-SE), by subsequent folds showing an E W direction. The third structural trend, NE-SW, is dominant in the area. The two studied structures are folded thrusts that, at present day, appear as strike slip faults, parallel or slightly oblique to bedding. Both of them become thrusts after restoring of the second folding stage. The present beds attitudes help to decipher the different mechanisms involved in the deformation along the stratigraphic column: the shallow-dipping thrust in the upper part of the sequence is linked to drag folds in both walls, whereas in the lower part (100 m below, approximately) deformation is resolved by means of a well-developed solution cleavage and brittle faults. The final stages of deformation probably involved the re-activation of some of these faults.
