Ethics Guidelines for Publication

Encrucijadas. Revista Crítica de Ciencias Sociales respects the fundamental ethical principles in research and asks authors to follow them in order to enable equal opportunities and ethical and responsible science.

The originals submitted must be unpublished texts that have not been previously published in the same or other formats. In the event that this is the case — for example, a previous version has been presented at a conference or preliminary results in another format —, this should be indicated in an initial footnote. Nor should they be simultaneously being considered by any other journal (or an explanation to this effect has been provided in the Comments to the editor). In summary, authors may not use texts that they have already published themselves, unless they have been deposited in repositories as unpublished manuscripts for consideration by anonymous peers.

2. Regarding the publication of texts, figures, photos or tables from other publications, authors must have prior consent from their respective sources and will be responsible for obtaining these permissions and stating them in the publication.

3. Potential plagiarism or self-plagiarism will be reviewed using automated tools. Manuscripts with a significant level of plagiarism or self-plagiarism will be automatically rejected.

4. Manuscripts that involve inappropriate scientific practices will be automatically rejected: falsification or manipulation of data, alteration of data analysis, collection of data without complying with basic ethical standards.

5. Studies involving human subjects must adhere to the ethical standards for responsible human experimentation and the Helsinki Declaration of 1975. The confidentiality of personal data of the persons and organisations involved in the research must be respected in accordance with the personal data protection regulations in force in each territory.

6. Research protocols involving human subjects that so require must have the approval of the research ethics committees considered relevant to the research, and the reference must be indicated in the manuscript. For example, in the case of experimentation with human beings or studies with minors. In the case of people as research subjects, they must have an information sheet and an informed consent form with which they agree and give permission to participate in the research.

7. If the research work has been funded, permission from the funding entity must be obtained for the dissemination of the results and the source of funding must be indicated in the manuscript.

8. The papers received will be evaluated by means of an open peer review, as indicated in the corresponding section of the Guidelines for Authorship. The right to waive the evaluation at any time during the process is guaranteed.

9. Authors must declare whether they have any conflict of interest with the subject of the study or the organisation funding the research. This declaration is the responsibility of the authors. Encrucijadas declines any responsibility derived from this possible conflict of interest and will assess the extent to which it is relevant for the manuscript to be published. A note called ‘Conflict of interest’ will be published at the end of the article. If there is no note, it will say ‘None’.

10. All authors must be aware of and agree to the submission of the article to the journal, although communication will only be with the corresponding author, who will decide on authorship.

11. Authorship of articles will follow the CReDiT system. The list of authors will only include those who have made substantive contributions to the work: research design and execution, data analysis, writing and evaluation of results, and approval of the final version of the text to be submitted to the journal. The contributions of each of the authors must be detailed in the manuscript. Any addition, deletion or reordering of names must be communicated to the journal and done before the manuscript has been accepted and only with the approval of the journal's editorial committee.

12. Encrucijadas follows the principles of open access and guarantees that all articles will be freely accessible from its website and the repositories that compile its articles.

13. Encrucijadas does not charge fees for the processing of articles or for submission, review and publication.

14. It will be compulsory for manuscripts to consider the rules on respectful and inclusive language: non-harmful, non-deterministic and non-essentialist (classist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc.).

15. Encrucijadas follows the principles of inclusion and gender equality, prioritising parity between men and women in the editorial team, in the evaluation processes and in the authorship. The inclusion of full names in authorship and bibliographic references is also guaranteed and compulsory.

16. Encrucijadas is committed to scientific integrity and transparency in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), and recognises the challenges and opportunities it presents. It is declared as a general principle, in accordance with COPE guidelines, that AI cannot assume the role of authorship, have a role in ethical decisions or manage conflicts of interest.

17. Authors must explicitly declare, if they do so, the use of any AI tool in any section of the manuscript, indicating the tasks, functions and software used in a section or subsection entitled ‘Ethical declaration of use of Artificial Intelligence’. The authors will be responsible for reviewing and verifying any AI-generated content included in the manuscript. AI tools can be used as support, but they do not replace the critical judgement and content evaluation of the authors.

18. Reviewers must explicitly state, if they do so, the use of any AI tool in any section of the manuscript review. AI tools can be used as support, but they do not replace the critical judgement and content evaluation of the reviewers.

19. The ethics and AI policy will be regularly reviewed to adapt to the corresponding regulatory and technological changes.
