Abstract

This article provides a new interpretation of Hobbes’ theory of freedom. Although Thomas Hobbes has traditionally been considered one of the main proponents of negative freedom, Q. Skinner argues that a detailed analysis of this English philosopher’s work shows that he considered different ways of conceptualising and theorising freedom. In this, the first part of his long essay, Skinner follows the development of the idea of freedom within Hobbes’ thought from the first edition of The Elements of Law, Natural and Politic (1640) until the publication of De Cive (1642). The second part (which will appear in issue 135 of Revista de Estudios Políticos) gives a detailed analysis of his use of the concept in his masterpiece, Leviathan.
