The use of picture books to deal with controversial issues in the classroom is also an opportunity for the training of primary education teachers. Literary education and the formation of critical thinking are the two main lines on which the interdisciplinary project "Picture books to approach migrations" is based. This article shows the first phase of the project, in which the training sessions and their objectives are detailed, in order to prepare university students to develop a didactic proposal aimed at a primary school classroom. The opinions and impressions of the participating university students on the suitability and usefulness of these training sessions are also collected. According to the results, for most of the students this first phase of the project has been valid, useful and relevant. However, some answers point out shortcomings regarding the knowledge needed to create a picture book, as well as the difficulty of proposing activities that encourage critical reflection.
