Abstract

Every year, thousands of students enrol careers in the field of Education. Due to the lack of documentary research on the subject, this study conducted a systematised review of the literature of the reasons why young people choose the teaching profession. The study identified facilitators and barriers to career choice through a qualitative content analysis. It also characterised the studies from an inclusive perspective. The results revealed an eminently exploratory and descriptive body of research, focused on the identification and description of motivational factors and lacking in qualitative depth from a social and critical approach. The studies indicated that extrinsic motivations do not carry as much weight as intrinsic motivations at the time of degree choice. It is recommended to take actions to identify the intrinsic motivations of the target public and to promote inclusive (non-selective) projects, programmes and public policies that work to bring young students closer to those experiences that involve teaching.
