Abstract

The Italian mercantile republics (Genoa, Venice) developed a central role in the insertion of the Kingdom of Grenade in the international commerce of the Late Middle Ages. This paper aims to study a hitherto little known aspect, the position of the Republic of Florence in the Nasri sultanate. To achieve this we shall take, as a reference, the commercial mechanisms developed by the Tuscan merchants in their relationships with Western Islam between the Thirteenth and the Fifteenth Centuries, highlighting the peculiarities observed in Grenade. Lastly, data on the Florentine galley system of commerce will serve to offer a provisional conclusion.
