Abstract

This article analyzes the history in Spain of the French firm Saint-Gobain, engaged in the production of glass and other building materials. Since in 1905 it set up its first and most important industrial subsidiary company in Spain (Cristalería Española S.A.), the French multinational experienced a process of almost uninterrupted growth in its neighbour country. It made large investments, trusting in the Spanish economy's growth potential, and worked to strengthen ties with politicians and businessmen of the time, whatever their ideological outlook. Brands such as “Duralex”, “Climalit” and “Securit” attest to the importance of Saint-Gobain in Spanish industry and Spaniards’ everyday life.
